ARGUABLY Camden’s most famous landmark, Kirkham’s Camelot could be the venue for your special day after Camden Council last week approved a development application to open the building to events.

The mansion received worldwide attention as the setting of television series A Place to Call Home and Baz Luhrmann film Australia.

Hundreds of residents took to the Macarthur Chronicle Facebook page after the meeting to share their excitement.

The post gathered more than 1300 likes, 150 shares and 200 comments.

The Powers family, Camelot’s owners, lodged the application to use the property for events to raise funds to help with the maintenance of the iconic building.

Councillor Peter Sidgreaves spoke of the importance of the building’s restoration.

“It’s considerably important that conservation of Camelot is maintained,” he said. “It will benefit the community greatly as it’s a huge tourism attraction in Camden.”

Cr Debby Dewbery agreed. “This is going to be a business that will assist the owners to maintain the house,” she said.

Councillors deliberated for almost two hours on various aspects of the application, eventually agreeing to allow the use of Camelot as a function centre for 18 months.
